Web Designer Or Developer

Last modified on 5/6/2004

The Internet has changed the way the world operates. Besides making global information and goods instantly available at the push of a button, it has also created Information Technology – an entirely new industry for job seekers to find employment and to develop valuable skills. Web design and development is part of that new industry and an area where job opportunities are growing at warp speed.

As the online world continues to boom, so will the demand for website design and development. Thousands of websites are being developed everyday for many different reasons. Websites are being developed as resources for people to find information, as ways to purchase items or goods, or as means for the public to view into the worlds of businesses, people or events. Whatever the reason, the number of websites that people access and use on a daily basis is only expected to increase.

Web designers and developers create the pages, layouts and graphics for a website. Web designers play a vital role in a website’s look, feel and navigation by focusing on attracting and keeping visitors on a specific site. The type of work that a designer puts into a website depends on the functionality of the website. If a website functions as a marketing piece for a company, a web designer might use design methods that keep visitors clicking through the pages in the website. However, if a website functions as an e-commerce site, the designer might use techniques that direct a visitor to the pages that initiate the sales process. Whatever the website’s purpose, web designers need to have the skills and education to accomplish a variety of goals.

Web design and development courses are typically offered as part of a school’s computer or technology program. During these programs, you will learn computer programming basics including HTML, which is the most commonly used computer language to develop websites. You will also be introduced to a variety of software applications that design website graphics and images and other programs that help create fonts, colors and other visually appealing aspects.

In addition to having the appropriate education, to secure a job as a web designer, you should also stay current on the latest design technology trends and receive regular training. As the job market for web designer becomes increasingly competitive, having the right combination of education and training will give you qualifications that help set you apart from the rest.
